Matt Stine · Falken's Mage

About

Falken’s Mage is the name I make things under. Matt Stine is the name on my résumé. Same person, same brain, one website.

If you got here from a technology organization: yes, this is me. I’ve spent twenty-five years in software. Right now I’m an Executive Director at CVS Health, leading delivery, reliability, and observability engineering for the Enterprise Data & AI Platforms. Before that I was a principal architect in JPMorgan Chase’s Chief Technology Office, and before that Global Field CTO at Pivotal. I wrote Migrating to Cloud-Native Application Architectures for O’Reilly, and I’m writing their report on governing AI-generated code. The full CV has the receipts.

If you got here from a tarot reading, a podcast, or a post on Mastodon or Bluesky: also me. I’m an archetypal tarotist and astrologer. I co-host Rewired with Jaye Anne Beringer, write Feral Architecture, made a rock opera called ARCÆON, and build TarotPulse.

Most people keep those lives in separate rooms. I did that for a long time. It cost more than it saved.

The two halves run on the same engine: pattern recognition under uncertainty. An incident review and a tarot spread ask the same question. What’s the structure underneath the surface behavior, and what is nobody in the room saying out loud? Engineering taught me to diagram the system before touching it. The symbolic work taught me to notice what the diagram leaves out. I’m better at each because of the other.

These days most of my engineering happens by directing fleets of AI agents, with human gates and independent verification on everything they ship. A lot of my writing is about what that kind of work does to the people doing it. Psyche, the cognitive system I built for myself, is where both halves meet in code.

I live near Memphis, Tennessee.
